November 17, 2015 By Annmarie Leave a Comment

This Sunday, you can bring all kinds of metals to etch with interesting, unusual or fun designs to make unique, one of a kind jewelry components for necklace pendants, earrings or bracelets. You are limited only by your own imagination. Kris Quinn will lead us in this artistic adventure. Plan to sign up and pay by Thursday 11/20, 5pm (3 people minimum for class to run). This is a chance to explore easy metal etching and maybe make some jewelry for gifts for an upcoming gift giving season. I took this class two years ago and really enjoyed it. Metal Etching ($39 plus materials) will run from 3:30-5:30pm.

The Silver Chest Vernon CT Consignment Jewelry Designers Judy Foster made these earrings after taking the metal etching class in 2013.

Google teams up with Lending Tree

November 12, 2015 By Annmarie Leave a Comment

Sales is all about overcoming objections to get you to buy- to make the purchase now. My full-time job is in sales so I know the art of the sales pitch.

I believe that the advertising being offered online through Google and Facebook is extortion. It is way overpriced. Someone described it as “pissing in the wind” as well in terms of its effectiveness. Google keeps trying to get me to spend more money to get more advertising time which I need, but can’t afford. So for me, cost would be an objection (plus principle but they would not understand.) I just got my second offer- the letter below-to be able to borrow money- to pay for their advertising. Isn’t that generous?

The devil is alive and well and works in the financial sector:

Birch Mountain Pottery Raku Demonstration

November 1, 2015 By Annmarie Leave a Comment

Susan Gerr has owned Birch Mountain Pottery in Tolland for thirty years. She held her twentieth annual raku day at Elaine Monaghan’s house today.

Glazed pottery was taken out of a hot kiln at 1800 degrees, dropped into garbage cans with newspaper to set it on fire. The fire resulted in metallic colors, crackled finishes and blackened edges on the pottery. It was a magical day.

Waiting for the last load to come out of the kiln, Susan pulled out four pieces at 1300 degrees to try another technique. People dropped feathers, hair, porcupine quills and sugar onto the hot surfaces to create new effects (mainly looking like blackened outlines):

Wire Wrapping St. Francis

October 25, 2015 By Annmarie Leave a Comment

IMG_4117IMG_4118Downtown Manchester Special Services District has a scarecrow contest running now through 10/31. Local businesses were encouraged to build and submit a scarecrow.

I worked for two days to wire wrap a St Francis (Catholic patron saint of animals 1180-1223 CE) and a small mangy dog. Both have wire frames stuffed with newspaper and a pillow. Both are covered with massive amounts of masking tape. I wire wrapped head, hands, legs, feet and a dog. I covered them with masking tape because I hoped it was waterproof. Time will tell.

I love my effort but my mom told a relative that I was working on an entry for a skeleton contest. I think that she sees a skeleton more than a scarecrow. I voted for the Scarecrow entered by the Cosmic Omelet. I thought he was the most fun and most attractive.
